Your Voice

I haven’t abandoned this blog. My life has just been very crazy the last few months and I haven’t forced myself to set it aside enough to listen for that “still small voice” that comes to those who are willing to hear. I’m trying.

Your Voice

It’s hard to hear that still, small voice
While I am in the storm.
Sometimes, I want to scream and hide
In some place safe and warm.
I’ve let the raging ocean waves,
The roaring of the wind,
Drown out Your voice and keep my eyes
On me and how I’ve sinned.
Lord, help me keep my gaze on You
And all that You have done,
Forget my losses and recall
The victories You’ve won.
Please help me find some quiet place
Each day where I can go,
And read Your Word and take some time
To just be still and know.
I miss the time we used to spend
When I could hear Your voice.
Please help me hear You speak again,
And quiet down the noise.

Feel free to print, share or repost anything on this blog. I do ask that you let me know if you use one of my poems on your blog or at your church somehow. It might give me an idea of better ways to spread His words, which I am always looking to do. And of course, always keep the copyright symbol and my name with the poem so I continue to have the right to use them. You may not realize that if something is posted enough times without the copyright notice, I could lose the copyright and then someone else could conceivably file for a copyright and I would no longer be able to use my own poems! It has happened, so please make sure the (c) is always on the poem whenever you repost. Thanks!

50

As I turn 50 today, I feel led to post something I’ve been pondering for a while. I am a sinner. By birth and by choice, I am a sinner. Sometimes I sin because I am simply incapable of not sinning. I miss the mark that is set too high. I am selfish and prideful. I am not perfect. Sometimes,  though, my sin isn’t simply a failure to live up to the ideal. Both before I chose to follow Jesus and, to my intense shame, too many times since, I have chosen to deliberately break the laws of Man and of the Sovereign God Who created the universe and everything in it, including me. He has decreed (as is His right as creator) that the wages of sin is death. I deserve death. I deserve eternal separation from my Creator. I have earned eternity in hell. But God loves me despite my sins. His Word also says that the gift of God is eternal life through His Son, Jesus, the Messiah. He doesn’t want me to be separated from Him, so He devised a method of saving me from that. About 2000 years ago, He allowed His Son to stand in my place and take the punishment for my sin. The God who is outside of time was able to know every sin I would commit during my life from my birth 50 years ago in 1965 until today and from today until I die. And Jesus chose to trade His sinless and perfect life for my tainted and sinful one. It wasn’t nails that held Him to that cross. He could have called legions of angels to take Him down and slay everyone involved in His suffering, including me. He, Himself, could have done it with a word from His lips. Instead, as He suffered excruciating physical torture and a separation from His Father for the first time (how intense that previously unknown loneliness must have been for Him), he was thinking of me, loving me enough to remain there and take that punishment so I could be released from it, so I could spend eternity in heaven with Him. I am filled with awe and gratitude that He would care enough for a sinner like me to make me a saint by trading His righteousness for my filthy rags. I could never be good enough to earn heaven, but He has earned it for me. What was already His, He earned again for me, then paid my punishment for me. Amazing grace, indeed.

I pray that while reading this, you were able to say that it was all true for you as well (well, except the 50th birthday part, of course). If you can’t,  please let me know what part you can’t say and let me help you see its truth so you can spend eternity with me and Jesus in heaven. And if you can say it all, for my birthday gift, type something below (as simple as Amen!) to let me know we’ll be spending eternity together. That would truly be a marvelous gift to see a long list of friends and family coming to heaven with me.

Final Steps

Sorry for the delay again. Life has been a special kind of crazy the last couple of months. On top of kidney stones that weren’t diagnosed for about a month and the aftermath of that, I was helping a good friend during her final time on earth.

Her memorial service is a week from Saturday and she requested I read this poem. God gave it to me a few days after we learned she didn’t have long. It was inspired by some things my friend told me and this picture of a statue in the front of a funeral home in Utah.

Final Steps

She looked so old and bent and worn
As she stepped toward the veil.
She leaned upon a wooden cane.
Her steps were slow and frail.
She took a last glance back at life;
She knew her race was through.
And taking one more step of faith
Was all she had to do.
She felt a breeze blow gently through
And beckon her inside.
She closed her eyes and in this world
The people said she died.
They saw her take her final breath.
Now she has passed beyond.
They said she’s dead, but she’s alive;
Her painful shackles…gone!
She opened eyes to such a sight!
The pain is truly past.
She’s running to the arms of Jesus,
Safe at home, at last.
Her body isn’t frail and worn;
Her strength has been made new.
Now worshipping her risen Lord
Is all she has to do.

My Abundant Life

My Abundant Life

My blessedness is not due to
My circumstance or gift.
I do not need an easy life
To give my heart a lift.
I don’t need perfect health to have
Abundant life down here
I simply need to know God’s love
And know, to Him, I’m dear.
In poverty or pain or loss
I still can find such joy.
For God has given me great gifts
That nothing can destroy.
When pain or sorrow try to take
The joy inside my heart,
I turn my eyes to Jesus and
I know we’ll never part.
With God’s Word in my life, I know
That I have all I need.
To live a joy-filled life on earth.
For by the Son, I’m freed.

God Promised

God Promised

God didn’t promise sunny skies;
No bed of roses here.
In fact, he promised in this life
We’d often shed a tear.
And yet, He said He’d be with us
Right through the very end.
And if we’d let Him in our heart
Then He would be our friend.
He promised us abundant life,
And hearts filled full of joy,
And love that overflows in us
So strong, none can destroy.
No matter what my circumstance
I know that I am blessed.
And God will comfort, strengthen me
And give me peace and rest.
I thank You, Lord, for all Your gifts
That prove how much You care,
And for the comfort and the peace
Of knowing You are there.

Perfect Weakness

2 Corinthians 12:9
And he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

Perfect Weakness

I asked the Lord to take this thorn,
Remove it from my flesh.
He said, “My grace is good enough.
Each morning, it is fresh.
My strength made perfect is displayed
In weakness that you bear,
Allow my strength to carry you
And all your burdens share.”
Most gladly, then, you’ll hear me boast
In my infirmity,
That Christ and all His glorious power
May firmly rest on me.
For though I may not understand
The reason for my pain,
I know whatever God allows
Is for His kingdom’s gain.
So I will boast and glory in
My pain and weaknesses
For in the midst of all this pain,
I know my Savior is.

When I Hurt

When I Hurt

Sometimes I feel such pain and fear
I beg You for relief.
I feel I bear a burden that
Is far beyond belief.
Sometimes I wonder if You’ll heal
My aching body’s pain.
For I can’t seem to do Your work
While pain and weakness reign.
I read Your Word, Your promises
To heal me by Your stripes.
And when the healing doesn’t come
I give complaints and gripes.
But Lord, please help me trust in You
And know that You know best,
And even in my hardest pain
Please help me to feel blessed.
Your thoughts are not the thoughts of men;
Your ways are not our ways.
Remind me of Your blessings as
I hobble through my days.
Please  keep my eyes off of myself
And always on Your Son.
No matter how I feel, I’ll say,
“My Lord,  Thy will be done.”

Little Things Matter

Little Things Matter

Whatever you do for the Lord
Cannot be called in vain.
If it is done with faithful heart,
Its purpose will remain.
When you get to the bema seat
You’ll likely feel surprise
By what God singles out for praise,
What’s worthy in His eyes.
The time spent all alone in prayer
And time with lonely souls,
Put patches over broken hearts
And filled such painful holes.
The children you read stories to,
The friends with awful pain
Who cried upon your shoulder as
Their dreams went down the drain,
Those hours spent to clean the church,
The cookies that you made,
The money given to the poor
Will more than be repaid.
“What you do for the least of these,
So you have done for Me.”
This is what Jesus did proclaim,
And all things, He does see.
So don’t feel unimportant for
The “little” things you do,
For God can see the loving heart
Inside, that’s driving you.

Poem on the Peak

Poetic take on the Sermon on the Mount. At least, the Beatitudes.

Poem on the Peak

The poor in spirit, surely blessed,
Shall see the kingdom come.
The mourners shall be comforted.
The meek shall not be glum,
For they inherit earth, itself.
The hungry shall be filled.
The ones who thirst for righteousness
Have done just what God willed.
So blessed are the merciful,
For mercy they’ll obtain.
And blessed are the pure in heart
For they shall see God’s reign.
The one who’s known for making peace
Wherever he may go,
Shall be known as a child of God,
From Whom all blessings flow.
Ye shall be blessed when men revile
And persecute you now
For righteousness and  Jesus’ sake.
Rejoice and smooth your brow.
For great rewards will wait for you
With prophets at the throne.
Look forward to the time when He
Will claim you as His own.
These things I know to be the truth
For so my Lord has told.
So share this Truth with everyone.
‘Til we’re called home, be bold!
